So, you should really get Diplo’s first album, Florida. We are talking pre-mash up Diplo, here. This album really shows how talented he is. I wish he would do more of this stuff. The psychedelic beats are out of control. Why can’t he do more of this shit?
I picked the album up back in Cleveland at Bent Crayon. A really sick record store that specializes in electronic music and having an organization system that no one understands. My friends and I always joke that you have to be hip enough to figure it out. Apparently, we don’t make the cut.
To top it off, their motto has major hipster points; “Bent Crayon has been specializing in important music since the doors opened in 1995″. Pretentious much?
Anyway, the best thing about this album is it came with an amazing tripped-out bonus DVD. The DVD is a music and video mash-up that includes rap, vintage cartoons, a drunk Florida hillbilly, vintage drug PSA’s, and other stylized footage.
It seems to be Diplo’s version of what he would do if he had a TV channel. This channel would apparently be called “whale box”, as indicated in the bottom righthand corner of the screen.
I actually lost my copy of the DVD somehow, which I’m super bummed about. However, I have been able to find these excerpts online. I hope you like.
